Client:
NIS Foundation
Year:
2019

Luugh
Size:
100kW
Luugh is a small town in Somalia situated along a river basin. At the height of the famine in 2011 a lot of displaced families moved into this town. Electricity was expensive at rate of USD 1.2/kWh. This was expensive for the host community and beyond the reach of the displaced families. NIS Foundation partnered with the local power supplier who was using diesel generators to find a cheaper way to generate power and reduce the tariff to customers in general and lower the price to a point of affordability for the displaced families. Solargen was contracted by NIS Foundation to design and install a solution. A 100kW hybrid solar and diesel generator was designed and implemented. This resulted in reducing the cost to USD 0.8/kWh.
